Vehicle verification (or VIN verification) is required on certain vehicles in order for them to be registered in California.  Some examples of vehicles needing to be verified include:

• Non-resident vehicles
• Any vehicles or trailer, excluding used motorcycles, for which there is no California record
• Vehicles where the documentation reflects an incorrect VIN

There are some vehicles that the Licensed Verifier is prohibited from verifying (Note:  The rules just changed in late 2009):

• Original applications for automobiles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles with an unladen weight  of 8000 pounds or less whose Federal Certification Label (Safety Label) is missing, altered, or as noted in the Reg 343 does not match the documents.
• Revived salvage or revived junk vehicles (Click here for more info)
• Used motorcycles with unavailable records or with documents from a foreign country
• Motorcycles with engine changes
• Incomplete or unassembled vehicles
• Verifier's own vehicle(s)

What will I need to see?

When I verify your vehicle, in addition to seeing the actual VIN on the vehicle, I will need to see whatever documentation you have on the vehicle such as title, registration, bill of sale, etc.  If the vehicle is 1970 or newer, I'll need to see the certification label (usually on the door frame or door).   I'll need to look for an EPA sticker, usually located in the engine compartment or on the hood.
